Mr. Granville. Lewis. Pomeroy (M.A and B.A)
Mr G.I. Pomeroy (M.A and B.A)
Head Teacher: 1957-1970: (Deceased)
Mr. Pomeroy was the first and last Head teacher of the secondary modern, (then the first teacher of Caerleon high.) and was renowned for his happy nature of teaching, i.e. “he was almost always smiling and checking on his pupils”.
Dr. Pomeroy was born in December 1916 in Monmouth and was educated at Eveswell Primary then, Newport High School (Queens Hill), where he stayed in further education, i.e. their 6th form (VI).
Mr Pomeroy at the age of 16 (1932), sat his school certificates (an older version of As or A level) in the year beginning 1931, with the Central Welsh Board which was later to become the WJEC.
In 13th October 1933, he was admitted to Cardiff University to study for a Joint honours degree in English and History. After two years study, (1935) he was awarded a Welsh Scholarship in language worth £50 a year, the equivalent of £1498.50 in today’s money, which would be the equivalent of a builders wage for 148 days!
Mr. Pomeroy’s entry in the Cardiff Historical Register' records that he passed History and English Language Part I in 1934, which made made him eligible for the degree of BA, which was conferred (i.e. at a ceremony) on 21st October 1934.
The Examination Statutes for 1935-36 state that if the examiners deemed a candidate's work in English and History Part II to be worthy of the degree of BA (a postgraduate research degree), they could authorise him with a certificate which entitled him to supplicate for that degree. Mr. Pomeroy’s work evidently met those criteria as the degree of BA was conferred on 25th July 1935.
Mr. Pomeroy was interested in most sports and followed Football and Rugby in the local area as well as kept a keen interest in the schools sporting and music achievements for both boys and girls. When Mr. Pomeroy, finished his decree he went to the Orient firstly on a educational trip and, where he took up residence, and I believe he helped the Chinese against the invading Japanese, as by 1937 there was the Second Sino-Japanese War, had started and could not have been a military officer in the commonwealth's armed forces as Japan did not declair war untill 1941.
Mr Pomeroy was the first head teacher in 1957 little is known of the years between 37 and 51, we know that he went back to university to study for an MA, he therefore, is likely to have left university on the 2nd May 1948-54. We also know that he must have resumed teaching and started teaching in 57 and ended with the school merger when it was decided that Pomeroy should leave, he then left to become head teacher of Caerleon Comprehensive School. Pomeroy started there in 1970 and retired at 1980 at the age of 65.
He has since passed away, and was survived by his wife and daughter.
